Helen Spencer-Oatey is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick, UK. Her interest in culture and politeness stems from the years in which she worked at SJTU in the 1980s and the topic subsequently became one of her main areas of research. She has published extensively in the field, as well as in the related field of intercultural communication, including a number of popular books (e.g. Culturally Speaking, Continuum, 2000/2008; Intercultural Interaction, with Peter Franklin, Palgrave, 2009) and numerous journal articles. Helen is particularly committed to the applied relevance of her research, and has developed extensive resources for practitioners, many of which are freely available via the University of Warwick’s Global PAD website, which has thousands of downloads per month.

摘要:Kevin Murray, author of a popular business book on leadership, The Language of Leaders, argues that relationships are the engines of success. Of course, in China everyone knows the importance of 关系(guanxi).  Yet Murray also maintains that leaders (at least in the West) have no schema or framework for thinking about relationships. This is the area dealt with in pragmatics (a branch of linguistics) by politeness theory, so surely we should be able to provide such a framework. Much important classic work has been done by theorists such as Brown and Levinson, Geoffrey Leech and Gu Yueguo, who have provided a firm foundation for current work. In this talk I explore recent conceptual developments within politeness theory, with a special focus on the move from linguistic politeness to relational management, and the ways in which the impact of culture can be conceptualised. The talk will end by considering the implications for teaching.
