For decades, numbers interpreting has been perplexing simultaneous interpreters who translate from English into Chinese, and for quasi-interpreters who learn interpreting it is one of the hardest aspects. To find out the reasons why quasi-interpreters make mistakes, the author of this article has carefully chosen 15 subjects out of 298 students of English major in their fourth year for this experiment.Through the experiment it is discovered that numbers of high frequency are the main reasons that cause the mistakes during simultaneous interpreting from English into Chinese. The unique structure of numbers not only affects translation of numbers per se and the accuracy of their neighboring sentences, but also affects quasi-interpreters’ understanding of the context. In order to prevent numbers from affecting translation quality,it is recommended that quasi-interpreters write down numbers with the aid of note-taking strategy commonly employed in consecutive interpreting so as to reduce as much load as possible in their working memory.
