There have long been controversies over pragmaticalization and grammaticalization as to what functions they actually play in the emergence of pragmatic markers. This paper tries to re⁃examine this issue within the framework of Ariels conceptual clarification of grammar and pragmatics and her standards of code and inference. Case studies of the linguistic evolution of“sort of”and“I think”show that though different from each other in many ways, pragmaticalization and grammaticalization are interconnected complementarily in different stages in the development of the two markers. Findings suggest that it is significant to explore the different features of pragmaticalization and grammaticalization, but unwise to put the two concepts into opposition or to confuse the differences between the two.
