Based on Mona Baker's narrative approach to translation and the ideas from narrative ethics, this paper explores the framing strategies and translation ethics in the 1953 Chinese version of The Gadfly, with three points of view listed in the conclusion: First, the framing strategies are of various kinds in the text, including not only omissions, a kind of selective appropriation of textual material, but also temporal and spatial framing and framing by labels. Second, the framing is done by Li Liangming, the translator as well as China Youth Publishing House, the sponsor. Third, the framing is motivated by an ethical claim of the times, with the maintenance od socialist ideology as its core, but there is still another ethical standard influencing the translator 's work, which is to reproduce the original text faithfully so as to make it literally value and description of western culture known to the Chinese readers. It is the two clashing ethics that brought about the 1953 version with different narrative tones and research values.
