The present study examines the features of language output and interaction patterns of dyads with different English language proficiency in text-based synchronous computer-mediated communication. In the study, subjects are divided into six types of groups(High-High,High-Intermediate,High-Low,Intermediate-Intermediate,Intermediate-Low and Low-Low),and data are collected from chat-logs and interviews. The findings reveal that the High-Low dyads generate the largest amount of language output and turn-takings,yet there is no significant difference among six types of groups. The findings also show that there are strikingly fewer cases of language-related episodes than expected. The interaction of the High-Low dyads is characterized by the expert/novice pattern, while the other five types of groups mostly work in equal collaboration. The findings of the study have implications for peer-peer collaboration in computer-mediated communication.
